Giacomo Lanzoni, Ph.D.

Research Assistant Professor
Primary Appointment of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
GLanzoni@med.miami.edu
1450 NW 10TH AVENUE Room 5010
Research Area: Dr. Giacomo Lanzoni’s research interest is centered on the development of Regenerative Medicine strategies for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Dr. Lanzoni`s work is aimed at regenerating and protecting pancreatic islet β cells – the cells that produce insulin and that are lost due to an autoimmune attack in T1D patients. With more than a decade of experience in stem cells and pancreatic progenitors, Dr. Lanzoni is currently developing methods that combine cell therapy and nanobiotechnologies.
Since coming to the University of Miami from Italy, Dr. Lanzoni has been collaborating with investigators at the UM Diabetes Research Institute on several key projects, including the use of biliary tree stem cells for the treatment of diabetes; the study of adult human pancreatic progenitors; the use of pharmacological agents that boost β cell maturation and function; the development of novel techniques to image and target β cells in vivo. He is currently developing methods to stimulate the engraftment and maturation of pancreatic progenitor cells, and utilizing mesenchymal stem cells to induce immunological tolerance to islet β cells.
Dr. Lanzoni earned his MSc Degree in Medical Biotechnology with full marks and honors at the University of Bologna, Italy, in 2006, and went on to earn his PhD in Stem Cell Biotechnology in 2010. He received the “Ruffilli” award for excellence in curriculum studiorum after completing high school, the “Proni-Caravita” award for his PhD studies in the field of stem cells, and more recently the “Mark S. Goodman” Outstanding Young Scientist award for his studies in the field of Type 1 Diabetes.
He served as adjunct assistant professor in Histology and Embryology, lecturer in Stem Cells and Cell Therapy at the University of Bologna, and was awarded a scholarship from the University of Bologna to support his continued research at the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami.
Dr. Lanzoni has authored 32 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 9 book chapters in the field of stem cells. He is an inventor of a patent issued in the U.S.A. and in other countries throughout the world, related to the transplantation of stem cells for the treatment of pancreatic diseases.
